Using DualFeeds With FeedBurner

This is a guide to using the DualFeeds Plugin with FeedBurner.

Adding The Second Feed To FeedBurner

To use DualFeeds with FeedBurner, you will need to add the second feed to FeedBurner. This must be done after you have activated DualFeeds.

You will need to know the URL of the second feed for your site. This is shown on the DualFeeds page in the Options section of the WordPress Admin area. It will look something like http://www.yoursite.com/feed/?dualfeed=2

To add the feed, go to FeedBurner’s home page and enter the URL for the second feed in the space provided (halfway down the page), then click Next. You will then be walked through adding the feed to FeedBurner.

Make sure you use a different Feed Title and Feed Address than you used for your first feed. When you complete the process, you will be provided with a FeedBurner URL for the second feed.

Note: this guide assumes you’ve already added your first (or normal) feed to FeedBurner. If you haven’t, you will have to add both your first and second feeds to FeedBurner (see the DualFeeds options page for the URL for the first feed).

Making The Second Feed Accessible To Readers

How you make the second feed available is covered on the DualFeeds Plugin page, in the Automatically Adding A Link To The ‘Second Feed’ and Manually Adding A Link To The ‘Second Feed’ sections.

The question is: which link should you make available? The default WordPress URL or the FeedBurner URL?

The key is whether you are using a FeedBurner URL redirection plugin, such as FeedBurner’s FeedSmith plugin or Flagrant Disregard’s Feedburner Plugin.

If You DON’T Use A FeedBurner URL Redirection Plugin

If you don’t use a plugin such as FeedSmith, then you probably edited your theme manually and changed the URL for the first (or normal) feed from the default WordPress one to the FeedBurner one.

If this is the case, simply add the link to the second feed below the link to the normal one. Follow the instructions in the Manually Adding A Link To The ‘Second Feed’ section of the DualFeeds plugin page. Just use the FeedBurner URL for the second feed instead of the WordPress one and you’re done!

Note: You will not be able to use the DualFeeds Sidebar Widget or the feed links after each post feature, as they will point to the WordPress URL, not the FeedBurner one. If you want to use these features, then you will have to turn on DualFeeds’ built in redirection. You do this by entering your FeedBurner URLs in the FeedBurner section of the DualFeeds Options page. This means new subscribers will actually subscribe to your WordPress URL, then be redirected to the FeedBurner URL.

If You DO Use A FeedBurner URL Redirection Plugin

If you use a redirection plugin, your site still uses the default WordPress URL and the plugin redirects this to the FeedBurner URL for the normal feed. You need to also redirect the WordPress URL for the second feed to the FeedBurner URL for the second feed.

Your current redirection plugin will not be able to do this. However, DualFeeds can do it for you. Simply go to the FeedBurner section of the DualFeeds Options page and enter the appropriate URL in the FeedBurner URL For Second Feed field.

You will also notice FeedBurner URL For First Feed and FeedBurner URL For Comments fields in the DualFeeds Options page. Leave these fields empty for those feeds you want your existing plugin to continue redirecting. Enter the appropriate URLs for those feeds you want DualFeeds to redirect instead of your existing plugin.

Should you use your existing plugin or DualFeeds for redirection? That’s up to you! DualFeeds redirection does everything that FeedSmith 2.2 does, but Flagrant Disregards’ plugin allows you to redirect category feeds, which neither DualFeeds or FeedSmith support (FeedSmith does not redirect category feeds. DualFeeds does not redirect category, tag or date feeds).

To create the link to the second feed, you can follow the instructions in either the Automatically Adding A Link To The ‘Second Feed’ or Manually Adding A Link To The ‘Second Feed’ sections of the DualFeeds plugin page. Make sure you use the WordPress URL for the second feed, rather than the FeedBurner one.
